Cockapoo vs. Cavapoo: Which one is the Right Fit for You?

Both the Cockapoo and the Cavapoo are incredibly cute, intelligent, and family-friendly dog breeds. But while they share many qualities, there are key differences between the two that may make one a better match for your lifestyle. Let's explore these differences in more detail. Mini Goldendoodle is included as they are very popular and many people are deciding between the three!

1. Origins and Background

Cockapoo (Spoodle)

  • Origin: A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, the Cockapoo is one of the oldest designer breeds, dating back to the 1960s.

  • Personality: Known for their playful and affectionate nature, Cockapoos are loyal but not as dependent as a Cavapoo. Content to be in the same room, don't always need to be in your lap. Cockapoos love THEIR people.

Cavapoo (Cavoodle)

  • Origin: A newer hybrid breed, the Cavapoo is a mix of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle.

  • Personality: With a sweet temperament and compact size, Cavapoos have rapidly grown in popularity as a beloved family companion. More submissive and need more attention, they want to always be in your lap. Cavapoos love ALL people.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Origin: A cross between a Golden Retriever and a toy or mini poodle, the only way to get a puppy this small is to do several backcrosses to poodle.

  • Personality: Mini Goldendoodles are smart, quirky, cuddly, and loving. Requires more training and mental stimulation. Tends to have a highly developed sense of self.

2. Size and Appearance

Cockapoo

  • Size: Small to medium, weighing 15–25 pounds and standing 10–15 inches tall.

  • Coat: Thick, wavy, or curly, often requiring regular grooming.

  • Appearance: Athletic build, expressive eyes, and floppy ears.

Cavapoo

  • Size: Smaller than the Cockapoo, weighing 10–20 pounds and standing 9–14 inches tall.

  • Coat: Soft and wavy, typically easier to maintain.

  • Appearance: Rounded face with a teddy bear-like charm.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Size: Their size varies and each litter can have multiple sizes, as they have the genetics of a large Golden Retreiver in them.

  • Coat: The coat varies, you can have wavy loose curls or tight poodle curls.

  • Appearance: Classic goldendoodle look in a small package.

3. Temperament and Personality

Cockapoo

  • Energetic, outgoing, and loyal. More independent at times.

  • Excellent with children, other pets, and families.

  • Loves to be the center of attention and enjoys playtime.

Cavapoo

  • Gentle, affectionate, and playful. Very submissive.

  • Thrives on companionship and loves to cuddle.

  • Ideal for families, singles, or seniors seeking a loyal, loving companion.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Think they are human.

  • Very smart, require mental stimulation as well as physical.

  • Unique personality will make you fall in love.

4. Energy Levels and Exercise Needs

Cockapoo & Cavapoo

  • Internet searches will tell you that Cavapoo has less energy than Cockapoo. I have not found this to be true. They have about the same amount of energy.

  • Both need mental stimulation through games and training.

  • Both adapt well to apartment living but still enjoys outdoor activities.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Mini Goldendoodles have a lot more energy.

  • Need to run.

  • Will get destructive if not mentally stimulated enough.

5. Grooming and Maintenance

Cockapoo

  • Requires regular brushing (2–3 times a week) to prevent matting.

  • Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is recommended.

Cavapoo

  • Needs regular brushing and grooming, though their coats may be slightly easier to maintain than a Cockapoo's.

  • Both breeds are low-shedding and hypoallergenic.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Requires daily brushing to prevent matting.

  • Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is recommended.

6. Health and Lifespan

Cockapoo

  • Lifespan: 12–15 years.

  • Common health concerns of Cocker Spaniels include ear infections, Cocker Rage Syndrome (should be very rare, 8% of Cocker Spaniels are affected and Cockapoo will be even less), and late life heart diseases.

Cavapoo

  • Lifespan: 12–15 years.

  • Common health concerns of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels include heart conditions (90% of Cavaliers will develop mitral valve disease later in life), and chiara-like formation which is when the skull is too small for the brain and leads to spinal fluid compression. (This shouldn't be a concern in Cavapoo as they are crossed with poodle.)

Mini Goldendoodle

  • Lifespan: 12–15 years.

  • Common health concerns of Mini Goldendoodles include luxating patellas, ear infections, cancer, and late life heart disease.

7. Training and Intelligence

Cockapoo

  • Highly intelligent and eager to please.

  • Responds well to positive reinforcement and enjoys learning new tricks.

Cavapoo

  • Equally smart but their number one concern is pleasing you which sometimes gets in the way of training.

  • Thrives on gentle and consistent training methods.

Mini Goldendoodle

  • More intelligent than other breeds.

  • Requires firm, consistent, long term training.
