Pet Insurance

What to look for in a pet insurance?

What is the cap on payouts?

Is there an annual limit?

Is there add-ons?

What is the monthly fee?

Does the cost increase as your pet ages?

Trupanion

Acclaimed for paying vets directly at checkout (90% coverage options) and avoiding lifetime per-condition limits.

Trupanion typically covers 90% of eligible veterinary costs for unexpected injuries and illnesses, with no annual or lifetime payout limits. You are responsible for the remaining 10% co-insurance, your chosen deductible, and any non-covered items like exam fees or routine care.

How the Coverage Works

  • Reimbursement Rate: Set at a flat 90% across the board.

  • No Caps: There are no limits on how much they will pay out over your pet’s lifetime.

  • Direct Payments: Trupanion can pay participating veterinarians directly at the time of checkout, reducing your out-of-pocket wait times.

What is Covered

  • Unexpected Illnesses & Injuries: Surgeries, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and medications.

  • Hereditary and Congenital Conditions: Conditions like hip dysplasia or diabetes.

What is Excluded

  • Exam Fees & Office Visits: Standard veterinary exam fees are generally not covered.

  • Routine Wellness: Vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and annual checkups are not covered, as these are predictable expenses.

  • Pre-existing Conditions: Any illness or injury that shows symptoms before your policy’s waiting period ends.

Deductibles

Unlike standard yearly deductibles, Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible. You choose a deductible amount (typically between $0 and $1,000. Once you meet that deductible for a specific condition (e.g., allergies), Trupanion will cover 90% of all future treatments for that specific condition for the rest of your pet's life.

Offers optional add-ons that expand your core accident and illness policy.

Available Add-On Packages

  • Recovery and Complementary Care: Covers holistic and alternative treatments, including hydrotherapy, chiropractic care, and acupuncture.

  • Pet Owners Assistance Package: A rider for real-life ownership hurdles, covering lost pet rewards, advertising, boarding fees during owner emergencies, cremation/burial costs, and third-party property damage.

  • Breeding Rider: Designed for intentionally bred pets to cover breeding-related illnesses.

Important Rules & Timelines

  • Enrollment Window: You must add these extras within 30 days of your initial policy activation date.

  • Built-in Extras: Standard features like mobility devices and prescription pet food (50% coverage up to 60 days) are already included in the core Dog Insurance by Trupanion policy at no additional rider cost.

Lemonade

Lightning-fast claim payouts, simple onboarding, and bundle discounts if you have renters or home insurance.

Annual Limit Options

You can choose a cap anywhere between $5,000 and $100,000:

  • Available Tiers: Common limit options include $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, and $100,000.

  • Premium Trade-off: Opting for a lower cap reduces your monthly premium, but leaves you exposed to higher out-of-pocket costs if your pet experiences a severe accident or develops a chronic illness. High-risk or large breeds frequently burn through lower limits (like $10,000 or $20,000) quickly when dealing with major emergencies, surgeries, or cancer treatments.

  • Reset Period: This cap resets annually upon your policy renewal date.

Additional Sub-Caps & Payout Rules

Beyond the overall annual maximum, keep these specific coverage details in mind:

  • Sub-limits on Add-ons: Certain optional coverages have their own sub-caps. For instance, the optional dental illness add-on is capped at $1,000 per year.

  • Reimbursement Percentages (Co-insurance): You don't get 100% of the bill back before the cap. Lemonade lets you select a 70%, 80%, or 90% co-insurance tier. Once your co-insurance and deductible are deducted, the payout is subtracted from your total annual limit.

Offers multiple customizable add-ons and preventative packages to mix and match with their standard Accident & Illness policies.

Stand-Alone Care Add-ons

  • Vet Visit Fees: Covers the examination fees charged by vets during unexpected illnesses or accidents.

  • Physical Therapy: Reimburses hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and physical therapy for functionality recovery.

  • Dental Illness: Helps pay for treatments like extractions, root canals, crowns, and surgeries related to dental illnesses.

  • Behavioral Conditions: Covers diagnostics, vet-recommended treatments, specialized training, and prescription medications for conditions like separation anxiety or phobias.

  • End-of-Life and Remembrance: Covers vet-recommended euthanasia, cremation, and up to $500 toward memorial items (e.g., urns, paw print casts, or even a memorial tattoo).

You can customize your policy using the following structures:

  • Capped Annual Limits: You can select a fixed annual payout cap of $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000. Any veterinary costs surpassing your chosen limit during the policy year are ineligible for reimbursement.

  • Unlimited Coverage: You can select an unlimited annual limit, meaning there are no annual or lifetime payout caps. This covers the true costs of catastrophic or ongoing chronic conditions.

    • Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention

    • Routine teeth cleaning (note: basic dental disease is covered by the base plan, but regular cleanings require the add-on)

Key Details on Fetch Caps

  • Specific Non-Medical Caps: Certain non-medical or extra perks do have strict, separate caps. For instance, vacation cancellations, advertising/rewards for lost pets, and death/theft coverage are strictly capped at $1,000 per year.

Healthy Paws

Key Coverage Details

  • Payout Limits: There are absolutely zero per-incident, annual, or lifetime monetary caps on how much the Healthy Paws: Pet Insurance Plans will reimburse for covered veterinary care.

  • Plan Structure: They offer a single, comprehensive accident and illness plan rather than tiers with varying financial limits.

  • Reimbursement & Deductibles: You select your preferred deductible (ranging from $100 to $5,000 depending on location and pet age/breed) and reimbursement rate (typically 50% to 90%). Once you meet your annual deductible, they reimburse covered costs up to your selected percentage without a ceiling.

Important Caveats for Older Pets

While there are no monetary caps on payouts, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Review 2026: Pros and Cons - NerdWallet highlights a few policy shifts as pets age:

  • Pets Enrolled at 7+ Years: For pets enrolled at age 7 or older, Healthy Paws may restrict available reimbursement percentages (e.g., capping them at 50% or 60%) and adjust deductibles upon policy renewal.

  • Premium Increases: While payouts remain uncapped, monthly premiums can rise steeply as your pet gets older and moves into higher-risk regional cohorts.

Additionally

  • Preventative/Wellness Care: Routine checkups, vaccines, spaying/neutering, and flea/heartworm prevention cannot be added.

  • Exam/Office Fees: Veterinary examination fees for covered conditions are excluded from the base plan and cannot be purchased separately.

  • Behavioral Therapy: Behavioral training or modifications for conditions like anxiety or aggression are not covered

  • No Per-Incident Limits: While there is an annual cap, MetLife Pet Insurance FAQs confirms they do not cap payouts per specific injury or illness. You can submit multiple claims for the same condition up to your total annual limit.

  • Deductible & Reimbursement Choices: Your annual payout works in tandem with your customizable deductible (ranging from $0 to $2,500) and reimbursement rate (50%, 70%, 80%, or 90%).

  • Annual Limit Increase: If you do not file any claims during a policy year, MetLife will increase your annual limit at no additional cost.
